Is teeth whitening safe?

Does whitening harm your enamel?

No. The peroxide gel used in professional whitening diffuses into the enamel and breaks down the coloured molecules that cause staining, then it is rinsed away. What about sensitivity?

It is not a sign of damage — it reflects the teeth temporarily dehydrating during the process, and it resolves on its own.

Who should not whiten?

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as a precaution.
• Under-18s, except where a dentist advises it for clinical reasons.
• Anyone with untreated decay or active gum disease — this should be treated first.
• People with severe enamel wear or exposed roots, who need an assessment before any whitening.
